Top 16 Least favorite books of 2016

Today’s topic was actually 16 new-to-me authors. But as I already had a post with this exact information, I decided to do my least favorites. Everyone loves some controversy.

Disclaimer: Just because I didn’t enjoy these books doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy them. And if you loved these books, we can still be friends. No need for hate.

16. A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

I was so bored during the beginning of this book. I know it was historical ish. But just hearing about her gruesome treatment and the plot taking forever to begin made me put this novel down and not pick it back up.

15. Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

This was a book club read for me. So I kinda had to finish it. But the thing is we had JUST read “These Shallow Graves” by Jennifer Donnelly. I just couldn’t help pointing out the parallels and frowning. The writing style was also not exactly to my taste.

14. All We Have Is Now by Lisa Schroeder

This was an apocalyptic novel. And if you like that kind of thing, I’m sure you’ll love this book. But the whole “The world is gonna end” just gave me anxiety and the characters weren’t my favorites so I just couldn’t…

13. The Crown by Kiera Cass

Ok I admit it, I’m a selection junkie. I hate the bachelor but I adore America Singer. In the Crown I finally warmed up to her daughter Eadlyn. But dude that ending. There was NO developement. It was just like suddenly, “But I LUV him!” I was shaking my head.

12. Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

I’ve complained about this series before and how it perpetuates the idea that cheating is ok. I don’t want to ramble forever about it. I was just seriously disappointed in this book and the direction it went.

11. Your Voice Is All I Hear by Lisa  Scheier

I didn’t hate this book. I’m pretty sure I reviewed it.

10. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

This book was awkward to read. I ended up putting it down about halfway through. I just couldn’t deal with the main characters and their “love”. It was weird. And not the fun kind.

9. The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith

I was so hyped for this book. But the main character was ridiculous and so unauthentic to herself and her character. I know she was raped and this was her story. But we didn’t need 4 years worth of story. Lower it down to one year and do seasons.

8.  The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

This book was horrible. The characters were all over the place. There was no cohesive plot. I wanted them to pick a direction and focus on it not just be like a toddler and into everything.

7. Vernal by Randi Cooley Wilson

The premise of this book was Trolls at an elite training school. It follows the Princess who is falling in love with her guardian. Except she doesn’t know that he is also royalty of a half breed race. I went in expecting the Vampire Academy. And instead wanted to throw up the entire time. The guardian takes a teaching job at her school and immediately starts having sex with her. He is all “I know we shouldn’t do this but I like your body!” SERIOUSLY?? NO!

6. Chosen Knights by Mary Ting.

This book was supposed to be very  Cassandra Clare. And while I could see the similarities, the writing was so awkward that I was constantly rolling my eyes. The relationship between the bad boy and literally angelic girl was just…pathetic and too cliched.

5. Twist Into Me by Devon Ashley

This was the second book I read in the span of 2 weeks where a girl is dating one guy. Then he dies and she ends up with the brother. Why did both not make this list then? Because that is pretty disgusting. Because in All In by Emma Scott, the first brother had cancer. And the girl had a friendship built with the second brother. I was able to buy into this scandal. But in Twist into Me she jumps into bed with brother 1 and the next morning tells people she loves him. Then she is heartbroken over his death. But he only died like a few weeks later? No No just NO.

4. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong.

Plotwise this book was amazing. I liked the story being told and was eagerly turning pages. My problem came with the main character. She is constantly being rude to her wolf husband then stripping and have hot forest sex. Then the next morning she’d push him away again. Only to get back into bed the next night. She had already made up her mind that she didn’t want this life with him but then giving into temptation. And look I like Hate to Love relationships. But this sexy time inbetween made Elena wishy washy and very unlikable.

3. A Step Toward Falling by Cammie McGovern

I’m going to get some hate for this but I have to say this. I do appreciate a story about being with disabilities. And I know the author was trying to represent them in the best way possible.But the story came off as telling people that we are all responsible for the well-being of those who have disabilities. These two kids are punished because they walk by this disabled girl being raped. But one of them was on the way to the field and couldn’t actually see anything. And the other TRIED to report it. But at football games people can’t hear you that well. She thought the teacher heard. WHY were they being punished. I mean I loved meeting the other people with disabilities and seeing their relationships grow with these two students. But I was NOT pleased with the message of this book.

2. Easy by Tamara Webber

I hated this book. The character’s were awful. The plot did a diservice to people who have been raped. And honestly…. who jumps into bed AND proclaims their love to a creepy guy you met the night you were raped?

AND 1. is …Fairest by Marissa Meyer

I kind of thought that Levana was a whiny baby. Yes she was hurt but it was her sister who did it.To me this was not reason enough for her to loose her shit and go after Cinder with vengeance and a thirst for blood. It didn’t give me a reason she created the wolves. Its like girlfriend literally lost her mind. I couldn’t appreciate her story and hated it.
