June Monthly Recommendations

Hello friends. Right now it’s time for another Monthly Recommendations post! What What!! And this month’s topic is retellings. Now if you know me at all, you know I am down for a good retelling. I previously did a a Top Ten Tuesday post about what to read if your bookclub likes retellings. Which you can find here. I decided to use a whole new set of books because who likes to read the same thing over and over? Not me! So here we go.

1. Sweetly and Sister’s Red by Jackson Pearce

The first is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel and Sisters Red is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I loved both of these books. I still need to read Pearce’s other two retellings. But I’m looking forward to it.

2. Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister by Greggory Maguire

I mentioned his novel Wicked in my last post on this topic. But I’ve also read this retelling which is the story of Cinderella but from the step sister’s point of view.

3. Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This is another Cinderella retelling but it’s set in modern day. I honestly cannot stop raving about this book guys. I enjoyed it so much. It touched my heart in ways I can’t seem to put into words.

4. Beastly by Alex Flinn

This is a modern Beauty and the Beast retelling with a little bit of magic. It wasn’t the best thing ever but it was cute and I liked Flinn’s take on the story. IMO you should go watch the movie.

5. Hunted by Meagan Spooner

While I didn’t love the romance in the book I thought the retelling aspect was one of the best Beauty and Beast retellings I’d ever read.

6. Beauty & The Outlaws of Sherwood Forest by Robin McKinley

I mentioned McKinley’s books Rose Daughter and Spindles End in my last post. Beauty is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and The Outlaws of Sherwood Forest is a feminist retelling of Robin Hood where Maid Marian is in charge and Robin Hood is the “dumb blond.”

7. The Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oaks

Not my personal favorite retelling but I recognize that some of you out there will appreciate this story. It’s about how the Queen of Hearts became the Queen of Hearts.

8. A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

This is a trilogy that uses a multitude of fairytales combined into one story. It’s not as expansive as the Land of Stories is. But it’s still pretty good.

9. The Grimm Diaries by Cameron Jace

Jace is an indie author I found on a whim one day while searching for fairytale retellings. The main series , The Grimm Diaries, is about the fairytale world but stars a Vampire version of Snow white and her Huntsman who is literally a Vampire Hunter. Personally I preferred the prequels that Jace wrote. Each one starred a different fairy tale character and told their indivisual story. There are 24 novellas in all and they come in box sets for ninety nine cents on Amazon.

10. Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross

This is another one of those fairytale crossover stories that combines multiple characters and tales within each story. It’s a trilogy so far with 2 novellas. But Cross might keep writing within the series.
